My Favorite Things

Beaches
I still remember the first time I set foot on a beach in Guanacaste. The light was softer than I expected, the air warmer, the ocean endless. It felt untamed, honest—like the land hadn’t been rushed or reshaped, just quietly respected.
Over time, these beaches became more than places I visited. Morning walks along Playa Grande, barefoot sunsets in Junquillal, the sound of the waves in Avellanas after a long day. Each beach revealed a different mood, a different pace. Some days were filled with surf, laughter, and salt on the skin. Others were quiet, almost meditative, where time seemed to slow down completely.
What keeps drawing me back is the balance—wild nature paired with an effortless way of living. No pretension. No urgency. Just the ocean, the sky, and the freedom to be present. Guanacaste doesn’t try to impress you. It simply invites you in.
And once you answer that invitation, it becomes very hard to imagine life anywhere else.
Trails
Some of my favorite moments in Guanacaste begin with the ocean—and continue beyond it, on the trails. They unfold naturally, early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the heat softens and the light turns golden.
Long before Costa Rica became home, trails were already part of my life. In Québec, I had the privilege of creating one of the largest trail networks in the province. Designing paths, thinking about how people move through nature, how landscapes can invite connection rather than interruption—it shaped the way I see land forever.
Here in Guanacaste, that same sensibility resonates deeply. In Las Catalinas, the trails rise gently above the sea, intentionally designed to flow with the terrain. Whether biking or walking, the experience feels intuitive, almost meditative. The ocean appears and disappears between the trees, reminding you that movement and nature belong together.
In Hacienda Pinilla, the trails feel expansive and grounded. They cross forests, open land, and coastal stretches, weaving daily life into the natural landscape. Movement becomes part of the rhythm—morning walks, bike rides, quiet encounters along the way.
Nearby national parks complete the picture. Trails through dry tropical forests and protected land speak of preservation, respect, and time. They echo a belief I’ve carried with me for years: when trails are thoughtfully created, they don’t disturb nature—they deepen our relationship with it.
These paths are more than routes through the land. They reflect a way of living, a continuity between where I’ve been and where I am now. In Guanacaste, the trails feel familiar—like a conversation that never really ended.
Breakfast
For those who know me well, I could happily live on Eggs Benedict alone. There’s something timeless about it—the silky hollandaise, perfectly poached eggs, and that first bite that feels like a slow, indulgent morning by the sea.
In Guanacaste, I know exactly where to go for this kind of breakfast ritual.
Alo Nico in Playa Flamingo, mornings feel effortless and refined, where flavors are simple yet perfectly executed. Sol Bakery in Tamarindo brings a cozy, artisanal touch—beautiful plates, warm breads, and that feeling of lingering just a little longer than planned. And at Beach Break in Playa Grande, breakfast comes with an ocean breeze, barefoot vibes, and the kind of relaxed elegance that defines Costa Rican coastal living.
These breakfasts are always accompanied by freshly pressed juices, vibrant and full of life—pineapple, papaya, watermelon, or a citrus blend that tastes like sunshine. And of course, no Eggs Benedict moment is complete without a great Costa Rican coffee: rich, smooth, and aromatic, whether enjoyed as a bold espresso or a creamy cappuccino.
Breakfast here isn’t rushed. It’s a moment. A pleasure. An invitation to slow down, savor, and start the day beautifully.
Costa Rican Coffee Culture
In Costa Rica, coffee is more than a drink—it’s a moment of connection. Inviting someone for coffee here isn’t just about the cup itself, it’s an invitation to slow down, share a conversation, and truly enjoy meaningful time together. Whether it’s catching up with friends or meeting with a client, coffee naturally becomes the backdrop for connection and warmth.
We are truly lucky to enjoy some of the best coffee in the world—grown on volcanic soils, roasted with care, and rich in flavor and aroma. Costa Rican coffee reflects dedication to quality and a deep appreciation for the land, making every sip a celebration of place and tradition.
In Tamarindo, just steps from your office at Plaza Conchal, there’s a delightful café spot that pairs perfect coffee with a welcoming atmosphere: Sol Bakery Tamarindo, where expertly prepared cups meet fresh baked pastries and friendly service. It’s a perfect choice for morning meetings or afternoon pauses with colleagues and clients.
On the Papagayo Peninsula, coffee can be paired with a truly memorable setting. Imagine a perfectly brewed espresso enjoyed with ocean views or tucked into a stylish resort lounge where the ambience feels just as exquisite as the drink itself. These elevated spots turn a simple coffee break into a beautiful experience that stays with you.
Here, coffee isn’t just a beverage—it’s an excuse to gather, to communicate, and to enjoy life’s simple pleasures together, one exceptional cup at a time.
Lunch
In Guanacaste, lunch is more than a meal—it’s a moment to savor great flavors, relaxed company, and beautiful surroundings. Whether you’re meeting friends, hosting clients, or simply pausing to enjoy the day, the right lunch spot can make the experience truly memorable.
One of my favorite places for lunch is Pangas Beach Club in Tamarindo. Located directly on the beachfront, Pangas offers a refined yet effortless vibe. Their dishes highlight the best of the region, from freshly caught seafood to vibrant, seasonal sides, creating a menu that is both delicious and authentic. The service is gracious, the ocean views are breathtaking, and it’s the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the moment.
Another standout is El Estuario in Tamarindo—a local favorite known for its creative menu and welcoming atmosphere. Everything is crafted from local, high-quality products, and pairing your meal with their craft soda—a uniquely Costa Rican refreshment—makes lunch a truly memorable experience.
These are lunch experiences that go beyond food: they’re about connecting, savoring, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures—one delicious regional dish and one refreshing craft soda at a time.
Dinner
Dinner in Guanacaste is more than just a meal — it’s a moment to slow down, savor flavors, and enjoy time with friends, family, or clients. From lively beachfront spots to intimate coastal settings, the region offers experiences that make every evening special.
For an unforgettable night, Tabú in Tamarindo offers a magical beachfront dinner with fire dancers on weekends. The combination of creative cuisine, ocean views, and lively entertainment makes it a perfect choice for a memorable evening under the stars.
In Las Catalinas, start your evening with a sunset drink at Sentido Norte, where the views and ambiance set the perfect tone. Afterwards, continue the night at one of the town’s many excellent restaurants, enjoying a relaxed and elegant dinner that highlights local flavors.
In Playa Grande, El Huerto is a must-visit. Known for its wood-fired pizzas, it also offers exceptional dishes like fresh tuna and other seafood delights. The combination of cozy, casual charm and high-quality cuisine makes it a perfect spot for a laid-back yet unforgettable dinner.
From lively beachfront energy to intimate coastal elegance, these spots showcase the very best of Guanacaste’s dinner experiences — delicious food, beautiful settings, and moments worth savoring.
Shopping
Tamarindo is more than a beach town — it’s a vibrant place to shop. From resort wear, breezy dresses, and local jewelry to handmade décor and artisan crafts, the boutiques showcase Costa Rican creativity and style. Stroll the streets, discover unique finds, and enjoy the relaxed, colorful atmosphere. Afterward, stop by a café or juice bar for a fresh Costa Rican coffee or tropical juice to complete the experience.
For the Kids
Guanacaste is full of family‑friendly activities that kids absolutely love — from adventure to beach fun and wildlife encounters.
Diamante Eco Adventure Park
A must‑visit for families, Diamante Eco Adventure Park offers ziplining (canopy) through the treetops, animal encounters, and safe, exciting outdoor fun. Kids can soar above the jungle, walk hanging bridges, and learn about local wildlife — all in a beautiful, natural setting that’s both thrilling and educational.
Surf Lessons in Playa Grande
Playa Grande is perfect for introducing kids to the ocean. Gentle surf schools offer beginner‑friendly lessons right on the beach, with experienced instructors who help children feel safe and confident on the board. It’s a fun way for kids to learn a new skill while enjoying the sun, sand, and waves.
